This episode was so full of fascinating content that we split it into three parts! Join us now for part one as we take a deep dive into the life and music of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey. Born in Columbus, Georgia, "Ma" Rainey was one of the earliest African-American professional blues singers and one of the first generation of blues singers to record. The "Mother of the Blues" bridged earlier vaudeville and the authentic expression of southern blues, influencing a generation of blues singers. “Ma” Rainey made her singing debut at age 14 on the Springer Opera House stage.
