General Information

The Springer Opera House casts a wide variety of actors in its musicals and plays. The most talented, best trained local artists perform alongside union and non-union actors from around the nation. The Springer also engages in non-traditional and colorblind casting and artists of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

Producing Artistic Director Paul R. Pierce and Associate Artistic Director Ron Anderson seek the strongest casts available for Springer shows and cast roles according to the demands of the production. There is no room for prima donas or divas at this theatre and so the directors also seek communicative, friendly, sane artists with the ability to share creatively in a family environment.

Members of Actors Equity Association cast in Springer productions work on the Guest Artist Contract (Tier II). Non-union artists work at various levels of the Springer Production Contract or as acting interns. Amateur and student artists are cast selectively according to their skills, training and appropriateness for a role. Out-of-town actors are provided lodging while under contract with the Springer Opera House
The Springer holds season auditions in late spring of every year for local and regional actors wishing to be considered for leading, supporting and featured roles in the upcoming season. In addition, the theatre may conduct auxiliary open calls throughout the year for chorus and ensemble parts.

The artistic directors also attend a variety of unified auditions to survey regional and national talent. These include the United Professional Theatre Auditions in Memphis (usually held in February), the Southeastern Theatre Conference (held in the fall and spring) and the Atlanta Unifieds (held in April of each year). On occasion, the theatre also organizes its own open auditions for specific purposes in New York, Atlanta or other cities.

When time allows, the artistic directors also accept ad hoc auditions by appointment. These auditions typically include contrasting (classical/contemporary or comic/dramatic) monologues of about two minutes in length and a song (if the actor is a singer).
